Course Description

Mental health first aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. First aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received and the crisis is resolved.

Mental Health First Aid aims to:

  • Preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others
  • Provide help to prevent mental health problems from developing into a more serious state
  • Promote recovery of good mental health
  • Provide comfort to a person suffering from a mental illness

Mental health first aid does not teach people to be therapists. Rather it teaches how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to go about guiding a person to appropriate professional help.

During this presentation, the participant will be introduced to what Youth Mental Health First Aid entails with a specific focus on crisis first aid. This includes information about suicide and self-harming behaviour. The participant will gain specific knowledge regarding what suicide is, myths and how to assist a person who is suicidal.

Additionally, the participant will also get a better understanding of the range of self-harm behaviours with clear explanations for this complex challenge, currently faced by youth and adolescents. Lastly, an overview will be given about the 5-step ALGEE model used by mental health first aiders with a specific focus on the A for crises.

The presentation intends to:

  • Give an introduction to youth mental health
  • Provide an overview of What it Means to Be a Youth Mental Health First Aider
  • Create a better understanding of what Self-harm and Suicide entails
  • Improve participants’ knowledge about what to do and what not to do in a mental health crisis
  • Provides the participant with skills on how to apply the A as part of the ALGEE model
